UNTIL DAWN (2024): THE SAME LONG NIGHT, A NEW CAMERA

7.0 of 10 bananas. A prettier rebuild of a great horror choice game, still a perfect Halloween night with friends. But the new camera trades away some of the old tension, and the original plays almost as well.
By the Alpha. PS5 game listing. Updated Oct 20 2026.
Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.
Platforms: This is the 2024 remake (Ballistic Moon and Sony Interactive Entertainment, released October 4 2024 on PS5 and PC). The Amazon button is the US PS5 disc. At my Oct 20 check it was sold by Amazon.com at 34.31 dollars. The original 2015 game was on PS4; it is a different product and not what this button sells.
Get Until Dawn (2024) for PS5 on AmazonSit with me a moment. Every October the troop asks me for one game to play together in the dark. For years my answer was Until Dawn: eight friends, one cabin on a snowy mountain, and a controller you pass around while everybody yells at the screen. Now there is a remake, so the question is whether the new version deserves the old answer.
What It Wants To Be
Until Dawn is a horror story you steer. Eight young adults return to a mountain lodge a year after two sisters vanished there, and things go very wrong. Your choices and quick reactions decide who lives and who dies, and any of them can die. The 2024 version rebuilds the game in Unreal Engine 5, with a new over the shoulder camera, a new score, reworked scenes, new collectibles, and a changed ending sequence.
What Works
The story and the choice system still work beautifully. Small decisions come back hours later, and the butterfly effect idea makes every playthrough a different night. It is one of the best games ever made for a group on a couch, with one controller and many opinions. The new lighting and faces look great, and the cast performances hold up.
What Breaks
Listen well. The original used fixed camera angles like a horror film, and that framing hid things from you on purpose. The new third person camera shows more, so some scares lose their bite. Critics were mixed, landing around the high sixties to low seventies, and many said the changes did not justify full price at launch. Some players reported stutters and hitches. If you already own the PS4 original, it still plays on PS5 and gives you most of the night.
Who Should Play
Play it if you have never seen Until Dawn and want a horror night with friends this Halloween. At this price it is easy to recommend for a newcomer. Skip it if you own the original and loved its camera. You will not gain much.
