SUPER SMASH BROS. ULTIMATE: EVERYONE IS HERE

9.0 of 10 bananas. The biggest crossover fighter ever made and the best couch party on any Switch, held back by shaky online play.

By the Alpha. Switch game listing. Updated Oct 18 2026.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: The Amazon button is the US Nintendo Switch game card, US Version (Nintendo, released December 7 2018). It also plays on Nintendo Switch 2. At my Oct 18 check Amazon.com was not the seller: the offer came from Woot, shipped by Amazon, in the low fifties, so check the seller before you pay. Online play needs Nintendo Switch Online. The DLC fighters are sold separately. No PC, PlayStation, or Xbox version.

Sit with me a moment. Every troop needs a ritual for settling arguments. Ours is four controllers, one couch, and Final Destination. Ultimate is the version of that ritual that never needs replacing.

What It Wants To Be

Ultimate gathers every fighter from Smash history, plus new ones, into one platform fighter where you knock rivals off the stage instead of draining a health bar. With the paid DLC the roster reaches 89 fighters. There are more than a hundred stages, a huge music library, a single-player adventure called World of Light, and endless rule options.

What Works

The roster is staggering and each fighter feels distinct. Combat is fast and readable for newcomers, yet deep enough to sustain a serious competitive scene for years. Local play is flawless, and a four-player session is still one of the best nights you can have with a Switch. Critics put it in the low nineties on aggregate.

What Breaks

Listen well. Online play has been a sore spot since launch. Input lag and inconsistent matches frustrate serious players. World of Light runs long and grindy. Unlocking the full base roster takes time, and the best of the DLC costs extra on top of a game that rarely drops in price.

Who Should Play

Play it if you have friends or family who visit, or if you love Nintendo history. Skip it if you only play online and want tight netcode.
