MARIO KART WORLD: THE WHOLE MAP IS THE TRACK

8.5 of 10 bananas. The best Mario Kart racing in years and a brilliant 24-driver Knockout Tour, wrapped around a free roam world that is wider than it is deep.

By the Alpha. Switch 2 game listing. Updated Oct 18 2026.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: The Amazon button is the US Nintendo Switch 2 game, game only (Nintendo, released June 5 2025). At my Oct 18 check it was in stock, sold by Amazon.com at 79 dollars. It runs on Nintendo Switch 2 only. Online play needs Nintendo Switch Online. If you do not own a Switch 2 yet, Amazon also sells console bundles with the game, which can be cheaper than buying both separately, so compare before you pay.

Sit with me a moment. I have thrown more blue shells than any primate alive, and I have earned every one of them back. Mario Kart has been a troop ritual for thirty years. World is the first time it stopped being a set of tracks and became a place.

What It Wants To Be

Mario Kart World is the Switch 2 launch Mario Kart. The courses connect across one big open world with weather and a day and night cycle, so Grand Prix cups drive you from one track to the next along linking roads. Races now hold 24 drivers. Knockout Tour is a long elimination rally across the map where the back of the pack drops at each checkpoint. Free Roam lets you drive anywhere and hunt small challenges.

What Works

The racing itself is superb. Rail grinding, wall riding, and water skimming add real skill to the old drift and boost rhythm. Knockout Tour is the standout, a tense, loud, all-in mode that feels like nothing the series has done. 24 drivers make every race chaotic in the best way. Critics put it in the mid eighties on aggregate, and the praise centers on the handling and on Knockout Tour.

What Breaks

Listen well. The connecting roads between tracks in Grand Prix are often long, flat, and straight, and many critics said they dull the cups. Free Roam is pretty but thin, with simple challenges and not much reason to stay. The price is high for a Mario Kart, and some players miss the huge classic track library of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe at launch.

Who Should Play

Play it if you own a Switch 2 and race with friends or family, or if you want Knockout Tour, which is worth the ticket alone. Wait if you mostly want a huge classic track list and already own Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
