SIGNALIS: A PROMISE KEPT IN THE COLD

9.0 of 10 bananas. A two-person studio built the best classic survival horror game in years: tight inventory, a cold sci-fi bunker, and a story about memory and love that stays with you. Cryptic by design, and the old school save rules will test modern patience.
By the Alpha. Steam listing. Updated Oct 21 2026.
Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.
Platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Xbox One (rose-engine, published by Humble Games and Playism, released October 27 2022). The button on this page is the Steam store page. I checked Amazon on Oct 21: the US Switch physical listing showed Currently unavailable, so there is no Amazon button yet.
Get SIGNALIS on SteamSit with me a moment. I grew up on the old horror games where you had six slots in your pockets and every bullet was a decision. Most modern horror forgot that discipline. SIGNALIS remembered, and then it used those old rules to tell a story I could not shake.
What It Wants To Be
You play Elster, a Replika, an android worker, who wakes in a crashed ship and goes looking for the pilot she made a promise to. The search leads into a frozen mining facility where the other Replikas have turned violent. It is top-down survival horror in the style of the early PlayStation era: tiny inventory, save rooms, locked doors, radio puzzles, and enemies that do not always stay dead.
What Works
The atmosphere is total. The low-poly art, the harsh sound, and the cold propaganda posters build a world that feels authoritarian and lonely. The inventory limit forces real choices, and the puzzles respect your brain. Under it all is a story about memory, identity, and devotion that unfolds through notes, dreams, and strange shifts in the world. Critics were generally favorable, with 85 percent recommending it on OpenCritic, and it has become a cult favorite among horror fans.
What Breaks
Listen well. It is cryptic on purpose, and many players finish without understanding the ending. The six-slot inventory and limited saves will frustrate anyone raised on modern checkpoints. Combat is simple, and backtracking with full pockets can feel like a chore. If you want answers spelled out, this jungle will not give them.
Who Should Play
Play it if you love Resident Evil and Silent Hill from the old days, or if you want horror that makes you think. Skip it if cryptic stories or inventory juggling ruin your night.
