What It Wants To Be
Capcom's 2019 remake of the 1998 classic, rebuilt in the RE Engine with an over-the-shoulder camera. Rookie cop Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield, who is searching for her brother, arrive in Raccoon City on the night it falls. Each gets a campaign through the police station, the sewers, and the labs below, plus a second run that remixes the story.
What Works
The police station is one of the best level designs in horror. Locked doors, keys, shortcuts, and safe rooms all knit together, and the map marks every item you missed. Zombies soak bullets and keep coming, so every shot is a decision. Mr. X turns the whole building into a hunt. Gore and sound design make every encounter land. The pacing is tight, and the game respects your time.
What Breaks
Listen well. The second half in the sewers and labs is weaker than the station. The second scenario reuses a lot of the first, and the two stories do not fully fit together. Some bosses are bullet sponges. And if you hate inventory juggling, the small pockets will test your patience.
Who Should Play
Play if you love survival horror, tight level design, and being hunted. Skip if you only want nonstop action. Then read my Resident Evil 4 and Resident Evil Requiem verdicts.
