MARIO KART 8 DELUXE: THE COUCH KING

9.0 of 10 bananas. The best-selling Switch game for a reason: polished racing, smart assists for kids, and real depth at 200cc. Mario Kart World is the new king on Switch 2, but this is still the easiest party yes in the house.

By the Alpha. Switch game listing. Updated Oct 21 2026.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: Nintendo Switch (Nintendo, released April 28 2017), and it plays on Nintendo Switch 2. The Amazon button is the US Switch game card. At my Oct 21 check the new offer came from a third-party seller, shipped by Amazon, at 49.99 dollars. Check the seller and price before you pay. The paid Booster Course Pass tracks are a separate download, not on the card.

Sit with me a moment. Every troop has one game that ends arguments and starts new ones. In my canopy, for years, that game was Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Grandparents, cousins, the little one who steers into every wall: all of them on one couch, all of them laughing.

What It Wants To Be

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the Switch version of the 2014 Wii U game, with all its DLC, a rebuilt Battle mode, and new characters. You race karts and bikes across 48 base tracks, with anti-gravity sections that flip the road over, and up to four players on one screen. Nintendo later sold the Booster Course Pass, which added 48 more tracks and eight characters from 2022 to 2023.

What Works

The racing is clean, fair enough, and fun at every skill level. Smart steering and auto-accelerate let young players finish races, while 200cc and Mirror Mode give veterans a real test. Battle mode is finally good. Critics gave Deluxe universal acclaim, and Wikipedia lists it as the best-selling Switch game at more than 71 million copies. A 2026 update also added enhanced visuals and eight-player local multiplayer on Switch 2.

What Breaks

Listen well. Blue shells and item luck still decide some races, which teaches young gorillas patience the hard way. The extra 48 tracks cost money on top of the card, and some Booster Course tracks looked plainer than the base game. And if you own a Switch 2, Mario Kart World is the newer game with a bigger open world, so think about which one your troop wants before you buy.

Who Should Play

Play it if you own a Switch and want one game for every guest who walks through the door. If you only own a Switch 2 and want the newest thing, read my Mario Kart World review first.
