MADDEN NFL 27: THE BEST FOOTBALL ON THE FIELD, THE SAME STORE IN THE MENUS

Sit with me a moment. Every August the troop asks me the same question: is this the year Madden is worth it? This year I can finally say the field is. The menus are another story.

What It Wants To Be

Madden NFL 27 is the yearly NFL simulation. You run a team in Franchise mode, build a player in Superstar, or collect cards in Madden Ultimate Team. This year brings new on field systems and presentation, and more tools for Franchise players.

What Works

On the field it is strong. Metacritic shows a 78 on PS5 and Xbox from about 21 critics with no negative reviews, and IGN gave it an 8. GameSpot called it the fifth year in a row that the football itself improved, and said Madden feels cool again if you stick to Franchise. Impulsegamer called it the best version yet.

What Breaks

Listen well. The Metacritic user score sits at a 4.5, and the anger is about money. GameSpot, IGN Adria, and GameBlast all flag intrusive microtransactions and a menu full of Ultimate Team ads. Game Informer gave it a 6.75, and critics still report glitches, slow patches, and tired menus. The PC version scored lower, at 70.

Who Should Play

Play it if you live in Franchise mode and want the best Madden football in years. Skip it if Ultimate Team pressure drives you mad or if last year's game still serves you.
