7.5 of 10 bananas. The 3DS ghost hunt Dark Moon comes to Switch with sharper art and the online ScareScraper tower. Funny and full of hidden rooms, but the bite-sized mission structure keeps yanking you out of the haunt, and Luigi's Mansion 3 does it all better.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: Nintendo Switch only (original 3DS game by Next Level Games, HD version by Tantalus, published by Nintendo, released June 27 2024). It also runs on Switch 2. The Amazon button is the Switch cartridge. At my Oct 27 2026 check it was sold by a third-party seller named Smooth Value and shipped by Amazon, a little under the original 59.99 dollar price. Look at the seller before you pay.

Sit with me a moment. Every troop has one member who jumps at every shadow and still walks first into the dark. That is Luigi. I respect a hero who is scared and goes anyway. This is the game where he did it five times over, once on a tiny 3DS screen and now on your TV.

What It Wants To Be

Luigi's Mansion 2 HD is a remaster of Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon from 2013. Professor E. Gadd sends Luigi into five haunted mansions in Evershade Valley to recover the shattered Dark Moon. You stun ghosts with your flashlight, vacuum them up with the Poltergust 5000, and poke at every curtain, drawer, and plant for coins and secrets. The ScareScraper mode lets up to four players climb a ghost tower together, locally or online.

What Works

Reviews landed in the mid 70s on Metacritic, with steady praise for the charm. Luigi's animation is still a comedy routine; he hums along to the music and trembles at every creak. The mansions are dense with small puzzles and hidden gems, and the ghost fights turn into a tug of war that feels great with rumble. ScareScraper is real fun with friends and is the main reason to pick this over a used 3DS copy.

What Breaks

Listen well. The game is built from short missions, and after each one E. Gadd pulls you out of the mansion to a debrief. On a handheld that suited short bus rides. On a TV it breaks the mood again and again. Some missions send you back through rooms you already cleared. Critics also called the price high for a 3DS remaster with few changes, and Luigi's Mansion 3 on the same console is the bigger, better haunt.

Who Should Play

Play it if you finished Luigi's Mansion 3 and want more, or if you have a friend group that will climb the ScareScraper together. New players should start with Luigi's Mansion 3 first.

STRENGTHS

  • Luigi's animation is pure comedy
  • Mansions packed with secrets

  • Fair ghost fights with rumble
