9.0 of 10 bananas. A detective RPG with no combat, a voice in your head for every skill, and writing that bites.

By the Alpha. Steam storefront. Updated Oct 13 2026.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, patch history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: PC on Steam is the button. The Final Cut is also on PS5, PS4, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and Mac. No Amazon listing is linked yet, so Steam is the only button.

Sit with me a moment. I have read a lot of games. Very few made me laugh out loud and then sit very still a minute later. This one did both, more than once, in the same conversation, while my own necktie argued with me.

What It Wants To Be

ZA/UM's 2019 RPG casts you as a detective who wakes up with no memory in the city of Revachol, with a body to explain and a partner who is far more patient than you deserve. The Final Cut adds full voice acting and new political quests. There is no traditional combat. Every fight, lie, and leap is a dialogue choice and a dice roll.

What Works

The writing is the whole game, and it is extraordinary. Your 24 skills are characters in your head. Logic, Empathy, Electrochemistry, and the rest chime in, argue, and sometimes lie to you. The Thought Cabinet lets you adopt ideas that change how you think and play. Failure is often funnier and more interesting than success. Kim Kitsuragi, your partner, is one of the best companions in any RPG. The painted art and the Sea Power soundtrack set a mood like nothing else.

What Breaks

Listen well. It is a reading game. If you want action, there is none. The pace is slow at first, and the dice rolls can lock you out of things in ways that feel unfair until you learn to embrace them. The politics are blunt and everywhere. There is also a sad story behind the studio. Several key creators left ZA/UM after 2021 amid public disputes, so the team that made this game is not the team that holds it now.

Who Should Play

Play if you love great writing, choice that matters, and weird, smart humor. Skip if you want combat or a fast pace. Give it three hours before you judge it.

STRENGTHS

  • Some of the best writing in games
  • Skills that talk back
  • Kim Kitsuragi
  • Failure is part of the fun

HONEST COSTS

  • No combat at all
  • Slow start
  • Dice rolls can sting
  • Blunt politics everywhere
ALPHA VERDICT: 9.0 of 10. Play it, slowly, and let it talk to you. It is one of the great RPGs, and it does not need a single sword swing to prove it. Get Disco Elysium: The Final Cut on Steam, then meet the troop on Twitch.

Store note: Steam is the only button until a real Amazon listing is linked. The troop earns nothing from the Steam link.
