7.5 of 10 bananas. Shinji Mikami's return to survival horror: scarce ammo, burning corpses, and a world that keeps rewriting itself. Brutal, gross, and memorable, but the story is a fog and the difficulty swings wildly.

By the Alpha. Steam listing. Updated Oct 25 2026.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: PC on Steam, plus PS4, PS3, Xbox One, and Xbox 360 (Tango Gameworks, published by Bethesda, released October 2014). The button on this page is the Steam store page, 19.99 dollars at my Oct 25 check. On Amazon US the PS4 PlayStation Hits disc was 37.98 dollars from a third-party seller and another PS4 listing was 57.99 dollars, both far above Steam, so there is no Amazon button.

Get The Evil Within on Steam

Sit with me a moment. The man who made Resident Evil came back to horror one more time and made something meaner. The Evil Within does not want you comfortable. It wants you counting bullets with shaking hands.

What It Wants To Be

You are Sebastian Castellanos, a detective called to a massacre at Beacon Mental Hospital. Within minutes you are pulled into a twisted world where places change shape and a hooded figure named Ruvik watches you. It is a third person survival horror game: you sneak, set traps, burn downed enemies with limited matches, and upgrade yourself with a strange green gel.

What Works

The resource tension is excellent. Every bullet matters, and the matches you use to burn bodies make every kill a choice. Some bosses and set pieces are unforgettable, especially the creatures that stalk you through tight spaces. The upgrade loop gives you real growth over a long campaign. It feels like a direct heir to Resident Evil 4, built by the same mind.

What Breaks

Listen well. The story is confusing until late, and even then it leaves gaps that the sequel had to fill. Difficulty spikes hard in a few chapters, and some deaths feel cheap. The original letterbox presentation and stiff stealth divide players. It is long, and the middle chapters drag. Critics were mixed: the Steam store page shows a Metacritic score of 68 for PC.

Who Should Play

Play it if you love classic, punishing survival horror and want to see where The Evil Within 2 came from. Skip it if you want a clear story or hate sudden difficulty spikes.

STRENGTHS

  • Tense, scarce resources
  • Memorable bosses
  • Burn mechanic makes kills a choice
  • Strong upgrade loop

HONEST COSTS

  • Confusing story
  • Wild difficulty spikes
  • Stiff stealth
  • Drags in the middle
ALPHA VERDICT: 7.5 of 10. A cruel, flawed horror classic. Play it before the sequel, and save often. Get The Evil Within on Steam, then meet the troop on Twitch.

Store note: the troop still needs an Amazon referral for this one. At my Oct 25 check the US PS4 discs on Amazon were 37.98 and 57.99 dollars from third-party sellers, which I will not push on the troop. Steam is the only button until a fair listing is real. This is not an affiliate link.
