THE EVIL WITHIN 2: A FATHER WALKS INTO THE NIGHTMARE

Detective Sebastian Castellanos learns his daughter Lily is alive, trapped inside a shared mind machine, and he plugs himself back into the nightmare that broke him.
What It Wants To Be
The Evil Within 2 is a third-person survival horror game. Sebastian enters STEM, a machine that links minds into one world, and finds the small town of Union falling apart. Between tight story chapters you explore open neighborhoods, scavenge ammo and parts, craft supplies, upgrade your skills, and pick side missions, while stealth is often the smarter choice than a fight.
What Works
The open chapters in Union are the best idea here: you choose where to scavenge and how much risk to take, and the town hides real secrets. Stefano, a murderous photographer who freezes moments in time, is one of the great horror villains of the last decade, and his chapters look like art gallery nightmares. Critics landed in generally favorable territory, and the game has an 80 Metacritic score on its Steam page. A free 2018 update even added a first-person mode.
What Breaks
Listen well. Combat is loose and gunplay can feel clumsy when stealth fails. The open areas fade in the last act, which falls back into linear corridors and a weaker main villain. Some scares lean on ideas borrowed from bigger names. And the PS4 disc is now a third-party seller item, so the price can move.
Who Should Play
Play it if you love Resident Evil 4 style horror with a little more freedom, or if you want a horror story with a real heart under the gore. Skip it if clumsy shooting breaks your patience.
