9.0 of 10 bananas. First person, one cursed house, and the scariest family in the series. The finale runs out of breath.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, patch history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: The Amazon button is the PS5 Gold Edition disc, sold and shipped by Amazon.com at my check. Sit with me a moment. Some games scare you with monsters. Resident Evil 7 scares you with a dinner table. I sat at the Baker family meal, tied to a chair, while Jack carved meat I did not want to identify. I have seen every hype cycle since the first zombie turned its head, and this was the moment I knew Capcom had found its nerve again.

What It Wants To Be

Capcom's 2017 reboot moved the series to first person and to a rotting plantation in Louisiana. You play Ethan Winters, searching for his missing wife Mia, and you end up trapped with Jack, Marguerite, and Lucas Baker. It was the debut of the RE Engine and a return to slow, resource-starved survival horror after the action-heavy years.

What Works

The Baker house is a masterpiece of dread. Jack stalks the halls, doors creak, and every save room feels earned. Inventory pressure is real, puzzles are classic Resident Evil, and the VHS tapes are brilliant short horror stories. Each Baker boss has its own flavor, from garage brawl to insect nest. The Gold Edition adds strong extra chapters, especially End of Zoe and Not a Hero.

What Breaks

Listen well. The final act, after the house, loses the tension. The Molded enemies lack variety, and the late shooting sections feel like a different, weaker game. Ethan is a blank slate with little to say. Some players will find first person too intense, which might be the point.

Who Should Play

Play if you love horror that builds slowly and punishes careless steps. Skip if first person horror makes you sick or you want Leon style action. If you finished Village, this is the house where Ethan's nightmare began.
