Then the sound started behind the wall. I have played horror for decades, and that house still made this old ape set the controller down.
What It Wants To Be
Capcom's eighth main Resident Evil, released May 7, 2021. Ethan Winters returns from Resident Evil 7, and his baby daughter is taken. He follows the trail to a snowy village ruled by four strange lords under a figure called Mother Miranda. It is first person, like 7, but bigger and more action-heavy.
What Works
Variety. Each lord has a different style of horror. Castle Dimitrescu is a gothic chase with the famous tall lady stalking the halls. House Beneviento is pure psychological dread and the best stretch in the series in years. The Duke, the merchant, is great company, and upgrading guns feels rewarding. It runs around ten hours, so it never overstays. The Mercenaries mode adds a fun score attack.
What Breaks
Listen well. The last third trades fear for gunfire. By the factory section you are blasting waves of machine soldiers, and the dread is gone. Some bosses are bullet sponges. It is less scary overall than Resident Evil 7. Ethan stays a bland hero, and the story twists can feel silly if you do not know the series lore.
Who Should Play
Play if you want horror that keeps changing its shape and a short, punchy campaign. Skip if you only want slow, scary survival with few bullets. For a remake that blends action and fear even better, read my Resident Evil 4 verdict.
