7.5 of 10 bananas. A tight, gorgeous sprint through Raccoon City that ends before it should.

By the Alpha. PS4 disc listing. Updated Oct 12 2026.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, patch history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: The Amazon button is the PS4 disc (Capcom). At my check Amazon showed it in stock from a third-party seller, shipped by Amazon. Check the seller and price before you pay. The PS4 disc plays on PS5. Capcom added native PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions in 2022. It is also on Xbox One and PC on Steam.

Sit with me a moment. I remember the first time Nemesis crashed through a wall in 1999 and said one word. My heart left the canopy. Capcom rebuilt that night in 2020, and the moment Jill hears that thud in her apartment, the old fear comes back with better lighting.

What It Wants To Be

This is Capcom's remake of the 1999 classic, built on the same engine as the Resident Evil 2 remake. You play Jill Valentine, and later Carlos Oliveira, escaping Raccoon City as it falls, hunted by a bioweapon that does not stop. It wants to be an action horror chase movie more than a slow survival puzzle box.

What Works

Jill is a star, quick and sharp, and the dodge gives fights a rhythm RE2 never had. Raccoon City looks wonderful: neon, fire, rain, and panic on every street. The early city section is the best part, with real routes, side paths, and supplies to hunt. Nemesis set pieces hit hard, and the RE Engine still makes zombies look heavy and wrong in the best way. The hospital stretch is tense and well paced.

What Breaks

Listen well. It is short. Critics clocked a first run at around five to six hours, and that landed badly at full price. Fans also noticed cut content from the original, including most of the clock tower and the park, and missed the live selection choices. Nemesis is scripted more than he is a stalker, so after the opening he feels like a boss rotation, not a hunter. Resistance, the bundled online mode, never caught on.

Who Should Play

Play if you loved the Resident Evil 2 remake and want one more polished night in the same city, or if you like replaying for speed and unlocks. Skip if you want a long survival horror game or you treasure every room of the 1999 original. Wait for a sale either way.

STRENGTHS

  • Jill and the dodge feel great
  • Beautiful, frantic Raccoon City
  • Strong hospital and early city sections
  • Built for replays and speedruns

HONEST COSTS

  • Short first run
  • Cut content from the original
  • Nemesis is heavily scripted
  • Online mode faded fast
