9.0 of 10 bananas. Ubisoft Montpellier's 2013 masterpiece on Switch: gorgeous hand drawn worlds, four player co-op, and music levels that will make you grin. One of the finest 2D platformers ever, held back only by its age and a few touch screen bits.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Sit with me a moment. There is a level in this game where you run across a castle to a rock cover of Black Betty, and every jump lands on the beat. The first time my troop saw it, nobody spoke until the end. Then everyone wanted to play it again.

What It Wants To Be

Rayman Legends is a 2D platformer for up to four players. Rayman, Globox, and the Teensies run, punch, and swim through painted worlds to rescue captured Teensies. Beside the main levels there are music levels set to famous songs, remixed Back to Origins stages from Rayman Origins, and Kung Foot, a frantic soccer mode. The Switch version adds local wireless play for Kung Foot.

What Works

It was one of the best reviewed platformers of its generation, and it still looks beautiful. The controls are tight, the level design is endlessly inventive, and the music levels are some of the most joyful stages in gaming. In four player co-op it is chaos in the best way, and there is a huge amount of content.

What Breaks

Listen well. Some levels were designed for the Wii U touch screen, where a helper like Murfy moves things around, and on Switch that role is handled by touch or a button and can feel awkward. It is an old game at a third-party price, and in the busiest co-op moments the screen gets crowded.

Who Should Play

Play it if you love 2D platformers, from Mario to Celeste, or want a beautiful co-op game for four. Skip it only if you already played it on another console.
