9.0 of 10 bananas. A brutally precise platformer with the kindest heart in the genre.

By the Alpha. Switch digital code listing. Updated Oct 14 2026.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, patch history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: The Amazon button is Celeste for Nintendo Switch as a digital code, so you get a download code, not a cartridge. At my check it was available and sold by Amazon.com Services. Celeste is also on PC through Steam, PS4, and Xbox One.

Sit with me a moment. I have watched young gorillas throw a controller at a hard game. Then I watched one die 400 times on a single Celeste screen and laugh every time. The game counts your deaths and tells you to be proud of them. That is wisdom I wish I had at their age.

What It Wants To Be

Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry's 2018 platformer follows Madeline as she climbs Celeste Mountain while fighting her own anxiety, which takes shape as a dark copy of herself. You jump, climb, and dash through short, hard screens, and each one is a small puzzle about timing.

What Works

The controls are perfect. Every death is your fault, and restarts are instant, so failure never wastes your time. The levels keep teaching new ideas, the soundtrack by Lena Raine is wonderful, and the story about anxiety is honest without preaching. Assist Mode lets anyone slow the game or add dashes with no punishment, which opened the mountain to the whole troop. The free Farewell chapter adds an expert level challenge.

What Breaks

Listen well. It is hard, and the optional B side and C side levels and the Farewell chapter are very hard. Some players will feel the story beats slow the flow. If you hate pixel art or precise jumping, the charm will not save it for you.

Who Should Play

Play if you like a challenge that respects you, or if you want a short game with a real heart. Skip if tight platforming makes you miserable, or turn on Assist Mode and climb anyway. There is no shame on this mountain.
