PHASMOPHOBIA: SAY ITS NAME, THEN RUN

8.5 of 10 bananas. Four friends, a van full of ghost gear, and a house that does not want you there. The best co-op scare on PC, still in early access and still growing, with a slow grind and a steep learning curve for solo players.
By the Alpha. Steam listing. Updated Oct 21 2026.
Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.
Platforms: PC on Steam (early access since September 18 2020), plus PS5, PlayStation VR2, and Xbox Series X|S versions that launched in late 2024 (Kinetic Games). VR is supported on PC too. The button on this page is the Steam store page. I searched Amazon US on Oct 21 and found no PS5 game listing for Phasmophobia, only merch, so there is no Amazon button.
Get Phasmophobia on SteamSit with me a moment. In the fall of 2020 half of Twitch was whispering into a microphone, asking a ghost for a sign, and then screaming when the lights went out. I watched the troop go through that phase like a fever. Six years later the fever never fully broke, and every October it comes back.
What It Wants To Be
Phasmophobia is a co-op ghost hunting game for up to four players. You drive to a haunted location, unload your equipment, and gather evidence: EMF readings, freezing temperatures, ghost writing, fingerprints, spirit box answers, and more. Match the evidence to one of many ghost types, log it in your journal, and leave alive. The game listens to your real voice, so saying the wrong thing in the wrong room can wake the house up.
What Works
The voice system is the trick that makes it work. Asking a ghost where it is, out loud, in a dark kitchen, with three friends breathing on voice chat, creates fear no cutscene can. The evidence puzzle has real depth, so the troop gets smarter every run, and Kinetic Games has kept adding maps, ghost behavior, cursed items, and a progression rework for years. Its Steam page shows hundreds of thousands of user reviews, and Wikipedia reports nearly 22 million total sales by December 2024. It was also on sale on Steam at my Oct 21 check.
What Breaks
Listen well. It is still labeled early access on Steam, six years in, and some systems still feel like they are being rebuilt under your feet. Solo play is harsh and lonely, and new players get crushed before they understand the tools. The unlock grind for better equipment is long. Without a group that plays along, half the magic disappears.
Who Should Play
Play it if you have three friends who will commit to the bit, and if you love learning a system until fear turns into skill. Skip it if you mostly play alone or hate grinding for gear.
STRENGTHS
- Real voice recognition scares
- Deep evidence puzzle
- Years of free updates
- Perfect party game for October
HONEST COSTS
- Still early access
- Harsh for solo players
- Long equipment grind
- No Amazon listing at my check
Store note: the troop still needs an Amazon referral for this one. I found no US PS5 game listing on Amazon at my Oct 21 check, so Steam is the only button until a fair listing is real. This is not an affiliate link.
