9.0 of 10 bananas. The best excuse to smash a world apart since the sandbox was invented, with a few frame rate scars when the rubble flies.

By the Alpha. Switch 2 game listing. Updated Oct 18 2026.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: The Amazon button is the US Nintendo Switch 2 game, Standard, game only (Nintendo, released July 17 2025). At my Oct 18 check it was in stock, sold by Amazon.com at 69 dollars. Sit with me a moment. I am a gorilla. I have waited my whole life for a game that understands the joy of punching a wall until the wall gives up. Nintendo finally built it, and it put a gorilla in charge.

What It Wants To Be

Bananza is a 3D platformer from the Nintendo team behind Super Mario Odyssey. Donkey Kong falls into a vast underground world and digs down layer by layer toward the planet core, chasing banandium gems. Almost everything is made of destructible material, so you punch, tear, and carry chunks of terrain to make your own paths. Pauline rides along, and her singing triggers Bananza transformations that turn DK into new forms with new powers.

What Works

The destruction is the headline and it never stops being fun. Every layer is a toy box, and the game rewards curiosity constantly with gems, fossils, and secrets tucked behind rock. Critics landed it in the low nineties on aggregate, and the praise is consistent: tactile smashing, inventive transformations, and huge, dense layers. A second player can join as Pauline in co-op, which makes it a strong couch game for a parent and a young gorilla.

What Breaks

Listen well. When the screen fills with debris, the frame rate dips, and launch coverage called that out more than once. The camera can fight you in tight tunnels you just dug yourself. Some layers lean on collecting more than on sharp platforming challenges, so players who want Odyssey level precision may find the back half looser. It is also full price, and the expansion costs extra.

Who Should Play

Play it if you own a Switch 2 and want the most purely joyful 3D game on the system, or if you have kids who like breaking things. Wait if frame rate dips ruin your fun, or if you only want tight platforming over freeform smashing.

STRENGTHS

  • Dense layers packed with secrets
