GRAN TURISMO 7: A LOVE LETTER WITH A PRICE TAG

Gran Turismo 7 Standard Edition US PlayStation 5 box art
Box art credit: Sony Interactive Entertainment, from the Amazon listing the button points to. This is the PS5 Standard Edition disc the button sells.

8.5 of 10 bananas. The most beautiful driving sim on console and a true love letter to car culture, dragged down by an always-online requirement and a grindy credit economy.

By the Alpha. PS5 game listing. Updated Oct 19 2026.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: The Amazon button is the PS5 Standard Edition disc (Polyphony Digital and Sony, released March 4 2022). It also exists on PS4, sold separately; this page sells the PS5 disc only. No PC or Xbox version at my check. At my Oct 19 check the offer came from a third-party seller, shipped by Amazon, at 42.65 dollars. Most modes, including the campaign, need an internet connection. PS VR2 support is available on PS5 if you own the headset.

Sit with me a moment. A gorilla does not need a car. I have arms. But I have stood in front of Gran Turismo 7's Café menu reading about the history of the Miata, and I understood why humans cry over engines.

What It Wants To Be

Gran Turismo 7 is Polyphony Digital's Real Driving Simulator. The single player spine is the Café, where you complete menu books by winning races and collecting specific cars, each one with a little history lesson. Around it sit license tests, missions, a used car dealer, a legendary car dealer, tuning, livery design, Scapes photo mode, and Sport Mode for ranked online racing. Later updates added GT Sophy, an AI racer built with Sony AI.

What Works

The cars feel heavy, real, and different from each other, and with a DualSense the adaptive triggers make braking a skill. It is one of the best looking games on PS5, especially in replays and photo mode. The Café turns car collecting into a guided tour of automotive history, which is a lovely idea. Sport Mode remains one of the cleanest, fairest ranked racing setups on console. Critics put it in the high eighties on aggregate at launch.

What Breaks

Listen well. You need to be online for most of the game, including the Café campaign, and server outages have locked players out of single player before. The credit economy is stingy and was rebalanced after a loud backlash at launch, while real-money credit packs sit in the store. Legendary cars cost millions of credits and rotate in and out, so the grind is real. The AI outside of Sophy races mostly chases you from behind in rolling starts instead of truly racing.

Who Should Play

Play it if you love cars, want a serious driving sim on PS5, or own a wheel or PS VR2. Skip it if you play offline, hate grinding, or just want arcade chaos. Forza Horizon is the better party game.
