Sit with me a moment. Old silverbacks know this one in the bones. Your young one grows up, starts making his own calls, and you have to decide whether to hold tighter or trust him. Ragnarok is a game about that exact fear, wrapped around an axe that comes back when you call it.

What It Wants To Be

Santa Monica Studio's sequel to the 2018 God of War. Kratos and Atreus face Fimbulwinter and the coming end of the Norse world, traveling across all nine realms. It launched on PS5 and PS4 in November 2022 and on PC in September 2024. A free roguelite mode, Valhalla, was added in December 2023.

What Works

Combat is deeper than the reboot. The Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos both get new tricks, and the Draupnir Spear later on changes how fights flow. Every realm looks different, and the side quests in Vanaheim and Svartalfheim carry real stories. Christopher Judge's Kratos is the heart of it. The game won Best Narrative and several other categories at The Game Awards 2022, and its accessibility menu is one of the best in the industry.

What Breaks

Listen well. Your companions solve puzzles out loud before you can, and that gets old fast. Some sections where you play as Atreus slow the pace when the story should be sprinting. The structure follows the 2018 game closely, so it surprises less. Late fights can lean on enemy health bars more than new ideas.

Who Should Play

Play if you finished the 2018 game, or if you want an action game with a story that respects grown-up feelings. Start with the 2018 entry first, because Ragnarok assumes you know these two. Skip if chatty companions and cinematic pacing drive you up the tree.
