Sit with me a moment. I stepped off the train in Midgar, looked up at the plate, and felt twenty years of memory rearrange. The original finished this whole stretch in a few hours. Remake Intergrade turns it into a full campaign, then hands you Yuffie for an encore.

What It Wants To Be

Square Enix rebuilt the Midgar portion of Final Fantasy VII as a modern action RPG and released INTERGRADE on PS5 on June 10, 2021, with a PC version later. You play Cloud as Avalanche fights Shinra, with party members switching in real time combat. Intermission adds a Yuffie episode set during the same Midgar window.

What Works

Combat is the star pupil. You weave basic attacks, abilities, and ATB spells until an enemy is Pressured, then pile on stagger damage. Switching characters mid fight keeps bosses honest. Midgar looks dense and lived in: Sector 7, Wall Market, and the Shinra Building all get room to breathe. The soundtrack still punches. Yuffie Intermission is a sharp palate cleanser with its own tools and tone.

What Breaks

Listen well. Remake stretches a short stretch of the original into dozens of hours. Side quests and padding show up when the main path slows. Some story beats diverge from the 1997 game on purpose, which will split the troop. Hard Mode asks for deep materia planning. And if you buy the disc, confirm whether Intermission arrives on-disc or as a code for your region.

Who Should Play
