Sit with me a moment. I rode a chocobo across the Grasslands with the old music playing in a new key, and something tight in my chest let go. I played the original as a young ape. This game remembers what that felt like and builds a whole world out of it.

What It Wants To Be

Square Enix's second part of the Final Fantasy VII remake trilogy, released on PS5 February 29, 2024, with a PC version in January 2025. Cloud and his friends leave Midgar chasing Sephiroth across open regions, from the Grasslands to Costa del Sol and the Gold Saucer, toward the Forgotten Capital. You can play it without the first game, but you will miss a lot.

What Works

The party. Synergy attacks and team banter make Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Aerith, Red XIII, and Yuffie feel like a family. Combat blends action and menu commands, and it rewards swapping heroes on the fly. Queen's Blood, the card game, is a hit of its own. The music is a gift. Big story moments land with real weight, and the Gold Saucer is a wild, happy carnival.

What Breaks

Listen well. The open world is checklist design. Towers, reports for Chadley, and repeated tasks fill every region. There are too many mini-games, and some are forced into the main path. The ending gets tangled in timeline puzzles that confused even old fans. It is long, and the padding shows.

Who Should Play

Play if you love the original, big party RPGs, or a story you can sink a whole season into. Skip if open world chores burn you out. For a tighter Japanese RPG, read my Persona 3 Reload verdict.
