FATAL FRAME: MASK OF THE LUNAR ECLIPSE: SAY CHEESE TO THE DEAD

7.0 of 10 bananas. A lost Wii horror game, finally released in English in 2023: you fight ghosts with an old camera on a cursed island. The atmosphere is superb and the camera combat is unique, but slow movement, stiff controls, and backtracking show its age.
By the Alpha. Xbox digital code listing. Updated Oct 22 2026.
Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.
Platforms: Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC (Koei Tecmo, remaster released March 2023; the original 2008 Wii game was Japan only). The Amazon button is the Xbox digital code, sold by Amazon.com Services at 49.99 dollars at my Oct 22 check, the same as the Steam price. It is a download code, not a disc, and Amazon lists it as non-returnable.
Get Fatal Frame: Mask of the Lunar Eclipse for Xbox on AmazonSit with me a moment. In the old days, the troop believed a photograph could steal a soul. Fatal Frame takes that fear and hands you the camera. Here, the picture is your only weapon, and the ghosts come closer for the shot.
What It Wants To Be
Mask of the Lunar Eclipse is a third person survival horror game. Young women who vanished from Rogetsu Isle as girls return to the island to recover lost memories, and the island's dead are waiting. You explore a hospital, a mansion, and old buildings by flashlight, and you fight ghosts with the Camera Obscura: frame them, wait for the right moment, and take the shot for maximum damage. It is a remaster of a 2008 Wii game that never officially left Japan until 2023.
What Works
The atmosphere is excellent: slow, quiet halls, whispers, and ghosts that appear at the edge of your vision. Camera combat is still unlike anything else in horror, and nailing a close up shot as a ghost lunges is a real thrill. For series fans, finally playing this lost entry in English is a big deal. Its Steam page showed Very Positive, about 89 percent of 1,995 user reviews, at my Oct 22 check.
What Breaks
Listen well. Characters move very slowly, and the controls feel stiff, a leftover from its Wii roots. There is a lot of backtracking through the same rooms. It is a remaster, not a remake, so the visuals are improved but not modern. And at 49.99 dollars for an older game, the price is high.
Who Should Play
Play it if you love Japanese horror, slow atmosphere, or the Fatal Frame series. Skip it if you want fast action or modern controls, or wait for a sale.
