FAR CRY 6: A GREAT VILLAIN, A HUGE ISLAND, AND TOO MANY CHECKLISTS

7.0 of 10 bananas. Ubisoft's guerrilla war on the island of Yara has Giancarlo Esposito as a chilling dictator, a big beautiful map, and wild homemade weapons. It also has the same outposts and checklists the series has leaned on for a decade.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Sit with me a moment. The cover sells you one thing: Giancarlo Esposito with his hand on a boy's shoulder, calm as a cliff. When he is on screen, Far Cry 6 is electric. The trouble is the dozens of hours when he is not.
What It Wants To Be
Far Cry 6 is an open world first person shooter set on Yara, a fictional Caribbean island ruled by the dictator Anton Castillo. You play Dani Rojas, a guerrilla fighter who joins the Libertad rebels. You take outposts, recruit allies, and build Resolver weapons from scrap, plus Supremo backpacks with special powers. Animal Amigos, like the crocodile Guapo and the dog Chorizo, fight at your side. The whole campaign can be played in two player co-op online.
What Works
It sits at 75 on Metacritic for PS5. Critics agree Esposito's Castillo is intimidating and cruel in the best villain way, and the island is huge, varied, and gorgeous. The gunplay is solid, the homemade weapons are silly fun, and co-op chaos with a friend is still what this series does best. At this price, the sheer amount of game is hard to argue with.
What Breaks
Listen well. Polygon called it a waste of potential, and Kotaku and Ars Technica both say Castillo is underused. Missions repeat the same outpost and checkpoint loops, the tone swings from war drama to cartoon gags with no warning, and critics found its take on a Latin American revolution shallow. The map is bloated with icons, and after twenty hours it can feel like a chore list with palm trees.
Who Should Play
Play it if you love open world shooter sandboxes, co-op mayhem, and a villain worth hating, and you see it cheap. Skip it if Far Cry 5 already gave you your fill of outposts.
