Sit with me a moment. Young gorillas sprint at the first big knight and die. Old gorillas turn around, ride somewhere else, and come back stronger. Elden Ring is built for the second gorilla, and it rewards curiosity more than any open world I know.

What It Wants To Be

FromSoftware's open-world action RPG, directed by Hidetaka Miyazaki with world lore from George R. R. Martin. It launched February 2022 on PS5, PS4, Xbox, and PC. The Shadow of the Erdtree expansion followed in 2024. This is the base game, not the Nightreign co-op spinoff.

What Works

The Lands Between hide something over every hill. Dungeons, catacombs, and bosses sit where you least expect them. Builds are wide: magic, faith, bleed, giant swords, or spirit summons for help. If a boss walls you, the map offers another road. Steam lists a Metacritic 94, and it won Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2022.

What Breaks

Listen well. It is still hard, and some late bosses feel built to punish more than teach. Story is told in item text and whispers, so plot hunters may feel lost. Performance on PC had rough spots at launch. Reused bosses in side dungeons show the seams.

Who Should Play

Play if you want exploration that trusts you and fights that make you sharper. Skip if difficulty makes you miserable instead of curious. For the co-op roguelike spinoff, read my Nightreign verdict.
