Sit with me a moment. I have a soft spot for any game where the hero is a big ape who solves problems by pounding the ground. But this jungle does not go easy on its king. I remember the mine cart levels on the Wii, one hit and back to the start, and my whole troop groaning in chorus.
What It Wants To Be
Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is a 2D platformer where Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong chase a tribe of Tiki creatures who hypnotized the island's animals and stole the banana hoard. You run, roll, and ground pound through eight worlds, plus the ninth Cloud Hop Island world first added in the 3DS version. Diddy rides on DK's back with a jetpack for longer jumps, or a second player controls him in co-op. A Modern mode adds extra hearts and shop items for newcomers; Original mode keeps the classic difficulty.
What Works
Critics landed it in the high 70s on Metacritic. The level design from Retro still holds up: mine carts, rocket barrels, and stages where the background itself attacks you. The rhythm is tight once you learn it, and the music remixes are a treat. Modern mode makes the game reachable for players who bounced off the original. It also pairs well with Donkey Kong Bananza if your troop wants more DK.
What Breaks
Listen well. It launched at 59.99 dollars for a port of a 2010 game, which many reviews called too much. Two player co-op can be more frustrating than fun, because one fall costs both players. Some motion based moves from the Wii feel odd on buttons. And the mine cart and rocket levels still punish hard even in Modern mode.
Who Should Play
Play it if you love tough classic platformers, never played it on Wii or 3DS, and can find it at a fair price. Skip it if you already own the 3DS version or want an easy co-op game for kids; Kirby or 3D World is kinder.
