8.5 of 10 bananas. A potato with six weapons fights twenty short waves of aliens, shopping for upgrades in between. Five dollars buys you hundreds of hours of quick, smart, build crafting runs. It looks plain and it repeats, by design.

By the Alpha. Steam storefront. Updated Oct 30 2026.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: PC on Steam for Windows, Mac, and Linux (developed and published by Blobfish; full 1.0 release June 23 2023). It also came to consoles and phones as digital releases. The Steam button showed 4.99 dollars at my Oct 30 2026 check. I found no US Amazon listing to verify, so Steam is the only button.

Sit with me a moment. I have seen survivors-likes crowd the jungle since Vampire Survivors. Most are noise. This one is a potato, and it might be the sharpest of the bunch. Short waves, hard choices, one more run until the bananas run out.

What It Wants To Be

Brotato is an arena roguelite in the Vampire Survivors family. You pick a potato character, each with its own rules, then survive 20 waves of aliens that last from 20 to 90 seconds each. Your weapons fire on their own while you move. Between waves you spend the materials you picked up in a shop of weapons and items, and up to six weapons can orbit your potato at once.

What Works

Steam shows 96 percent positive from 32,717 English reviews, and 90 percent positive in the last 30 days at my Oct 30 check. Blobfish said it passed two million Steam copies by its 1.0 launch. The short waves make every decision count, the characters change how you build in real ways, and a full run fits in a coffee break. For 4.99 dollars, few games give back this many hours.

What Breaks

Listen well. The art is simple and the arena is a single square, so it never wows the eyes. Runs follow the same shape every time, and some builds are clearly stronger than others. On higher Danger levels the screen gets busy enough that you lose your potato in the crowd. If survivors-likes never clicked for you, this will not change your mind.

Who Should Play

Play it if you loved Vampire Survivors or Megabonk, love theorycrafting builds, or want a great game for a few minutes at a time on a weak laptop. Skip it if you need a story or new places to explore.

STRENGTHS

  • Short, tense waves where every choice matters
  • Dozens of characters that change your build
  • Runs fit in a coffee break
  • 4.99 dollars at my check

HONEST COSTS

  • Plain art, one arena
  • Every run has the same shape
  • Screen gets messy on high difficulty
  • No verified Amazon copy
ALPHA VERDICT: 8.5 of 10. The smartest five dollars in the survivors-like jungle. Buy it, then say goodbye to your evenings. Get Brotato on Steam, then meet the troop on Twitch.

Store note: the troop still needs an Amazon referral for this one. I found no verified US Amazon listing for Brotato. Steam is the only button until a fair listing is real. This is not an affiliate link.
