Sit with me a moment. The boss that ends the first chapter beat me eleven times. I did not get better at dodging. I went to the garage, swapped my legs, my weapons, and my plan, and beat it on the next try. That is the whole lesson of Armored Core VI: the machine is your answer.

What It Wants To Be

FromSoftware's return to its mech series, released August 25, 2023 and published by Bandai Namco. You are a mercenary pilot on the planet Rubicon 3, taking missions from corporations fighting over a dangerous resource. Mission-based structure, deep mech assembly, and boss fights in the studio's style.

What Works

Movement is fast and vertical. Boosting, hovering, and dashing around huge enemies feels great. The stagger system rewards pressure, so aggression pays. Assembly is deep: frames, legs, boosters, and weapons change how you play. Boss fights are loud and memorable. New Game Plus adds missions and other endings, so a second run is worth it. Online PvP is there for the brave.

What Breaks

Listen well. Story comes through radio chatter over static mission briefings, which feels thin. Some missions are short filler. Difficulty spikes at chapter bosses are sharp, and new players may not realize the answer is the garage, not reflexes. Lock-on can lose track in busy fights.

Who Should Play

Play if you love building things and testing them under fire. Skip if you want an open world or a story told with cutscenes. For FromSoftware with swords instead of missiles, read my Sekiro verdict.
