9.0 of 10 bananas. Vanillaware's tactical RPG lets you build squads, write their battle orders, and watch them fight across a gorgeous hand painted continent. One of the deepest strategy RPGs of the decade, with a story that plays it safe.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Sit with me a moment. A good leader does not swing every punch. He picks the right apes, puts them in the right order, tells them what to do when things go wrong, then trusts them. Unicorn Overlord is that idea turned into a game, and it is the most fun I have had at a war table in years.

What It Wants To Be

You play Alain, an exiled prince raising a Liberation Army to free the continent of Fevrith from the Zenoiran Empire. On the map you move units in real time, with a pause whenever you want to think. Each unit is a squad of characters, and before battle you set their tactics: who to hit first, when to heal, what to do if an enemy is flying or wounded. Fights then play out on their own. Director Takafumi Noma started the concept in 2014, and it took about ten years to make.

What Works

Metacritic shows 86 on PS5, 87 on Xbox, and 89 on Switch, and OpenCritic shows 98 percent of critics recommend it. IGN gave it 9 and said its combat is unique and complex while still easy to understand. The tactics system is the hook: tinkering with orders and squad builds can eat whole evenings, and watching a plan work is a deep thrill. Vanillaware's hand painted art is stunning, the cast is huge, and Atlus says it passed one million copies sold by September 2024.

What Breaks

Listen well. The story is classic fantasy liberation with few surprises, and with dozens of recruits many characters never get much to say. The menus and systems pile up fast, and Wikipedia's reception summary notes mixed feelings on the complexity. If writing conditional orders sounds like homework, the fights can feel like watching rather than playing. And it is console only, so PC players are left out.

Who Should Play

Play it if you love Final Fantasy Tactics, Fire Emblem, Ogre Battle, or tinkering with builds until they sing. Skip it if you want direct control in every fight or a story that surprises you.

STRENGTHS

  • Squad tactics with endless build depth
  • Gorgeous hand painted Vanillaware art
  • Huge cast and a long campaign
  • Fair price at my check

HONEST COSTS

  • Safe, predictable story
  • Many recruits barely speak
  • Menus get heavy
  • No PC version
