UNDERTALE: THE RPG WHERE MERCY IS A WEAPON

9.0 of 10 bananas. A tiny cult classic that remembers what you did, and asks you to care.
By the Alpha. Steam storefront. Updated Oct 16 2026.
Honest note: This verdict is not from a fresh hands-on playtest. I built it from launch coverage, critic consensus, patch history, and known play. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.
Platforms: PC on Steam is the button. Switch, PlayStation, and Xbox versions also exist. No Amazon listing is linked yet, so Steam is the only button.
Get Undertale on SteamSit with me a moment. Every RPG I have played asks how strong I am. Undertale asks how kind I am. That question stayed with me longer than any boss fight.
What It Wants To Be
Toby Fox made Undertale, released in 2015. A human child falls into the Underground, a land of monsters sealed away by humans long ago. Every fight can end by killing or by sparing, and the game remembers which path you chose.
What Works
The writing is warm, strange, and very funny. Sans, Papyrus, and Toriel became icons for a reason. Battles mix turn based menus with small bullet hell dodging, and every boss has its own rhythm. The soundtrack is unforgettable. Choices carry weight across runs in ways few games try.
What Breaks
Listen well. The pixel art is very simple and will not impress everyone. Some bullet patterns are hard for players who came for a story. The humor is specific, and if it does not land for you, the game loses much of its pull. The fandom spoils it everywhere.
Who Should Play
Play if you want an RPG that makes you think about your choices, and play it before reading anything. Skip if you need big visuals or long, deep combat systems.
STRENGTHS
- Writing full of heart and jokes
- Mercy as a real mechanic
- A legendary soundtrack
- Choices that are remembered
HONEST COSTS
- Very simple visuals
- Bullet dodging can frustrate
- Humor that will not land for all
- No Amazon offer to link yet
Store note: Steam is the only button until a real Amazon listing is linked. The troop earns nothing from the Steam link.
