9.0 of 10 bananas. A 2D sandbox with a mountain of bosses, loot, and building, still getting free updates fifteen years on.

By the Alpha. Steam storefront. Updated Oct 17 2026.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: PC on Steam is the button, at 9.99 dollars at my Oct 17 check. Terraria is also on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and phones. I could not find a fairly priced US Amazon console listing: the Switch card I found was 99.99 dollars from a third-party seller, so I will not send you there. Steam is the only button until a fair Amazon listing is real.

Sit with me a moment. People call Terraria the 2D Minecraft. That is like calling a silverback a big monkey. You start with a copper pickaxe and a bad haircut. A hundred hours later you are fighting a giant mechanical eye in the sky with gear you crafted from a dozen biomes.

What It Wants To Be

Terraria is a side-view sandbox from Re-Logic. You dig, explore caves, build houses that attract helpful townsfolk, and craft better weapons and armor to take on bosses and events. Beat the right boss and the whole world changes into a harder mode with new enemies and loot. The 1.4.5 Bigger and Boulder update reached PC, consoles, and mobile on January 27 2026, with console hotfixes through September 2026.

What Works

The progression is the hook. Every boss unlocks new materials, and every new material makes the next boss beatable. There are thousands of items and many character builds, from melee to magic to summoner. Co-op with friends turns it into a shared base and a shared panic when the Blood Moon rises. At 9.99 dollars on Steam, few games give back this many hours per banana.

What Breaks

Listen well. Terraria barely tells you what to do. Without the Guide NPC and a wiki tab open, new players get lost fast. The early hours look rough before your gear and world grow. Controller play on consoles has improved with 1.4.5, but mouse and keyboard still feel best for building. Hardmode can swing hard in difficulty.

Who Should Play

Play it if you love loot, boss ladders, and building with friends. It is perfect for a co-op crew on a budget. Skip it if you want a guided story or hate reading a wiki.

STRENGTHS

  • Huge boss and loot ladder
  • Free updates for years
  • Great co-op
  • Cheap on Steam

HONEST COSTS

  • Explains almost nothing
  • Rough first hours
  • Best with mouse and keyboard
  • No fair Amazon listing yet
ALPHA VERDICT: 9.0 of 10. Play it, bring a friend, and keep the wiki open. Get Terraria on Steam, then meet the troop on Twitch.

Store note: the troop still needs an Amazon referral for this one. Steam is the only button until a fair listing is real.
