VALHEIM 1.0: THE LONGHOUSE STANDS

9 of 10 bananas. Elite survival with small scars.
By the Alpha. Survival. Updated Sept 2026.
Get Valheim on SteamSit with me a moment. I have chopped trees with the troop until the night horn called. Valheim leaving Early Access for 1.0 feels less like a launch party and more like a longhouse finally finished. The roof holds. The fire stays lit. The next biome still wants your blood.
What It Wants To Be
Valheim is Viking survival co-op built on honest loops: gather, craft, sail, fight a boss, unlock the next wild. Iron Gate wants a world that teaches through death and weather, not through a tutorial that holds your hand. Full release polishes the path without sanding off the grit.
What Works
Boss gated progression still rules. Each biome feels like a new law of the land. Building remains the quiet joy of the game. A good hall with friends is worth more bananas than any loot list. Sailing still makes the map feel huge. Combat rewards timing and food prep, not empty button mash.
I returned for dozens of hours across Early Access and the 1.0 pass. The systems still invite one more trip for ore, one more roof beam, one more night sail. That is rare survival magic.
What Breaks
Listen well. Base raids and progression spikes can punish solo players harder than a fair pack. Some mid game grind for materials still tests patience. Performance on huge builds can stutter. None of that kills the joy. It keeps the score from a perfect ten.
Who Should Play
Play if you love building with a small troop and earning each biome. Wait for a sale if you hate material loops. Solo is possible. Co-op is where the thunder lives.
STRENGTHS
- Boss gated biomes with true discovery
- Building and sailing that still feel proud
- Co-op nights that bond a troop
- 1.0 polish without soft corporate fog
HONEST COSTS
- Material grind can slow the mid game
- Solo play is harsher than a pack
- Huge bases can tax performance
