SONIC X SHADOW GENERATIONS: THE EDGY HEDGEHOG STEALS THE SHOW

Sonic X Shadow Generations US PS5 box art with Shadow in front and classic and modern Sonic, rated E10+
Box art credit: SEGA, from the Amazon listing the button points to. This is the US PS5 disc.

8.0 of 10 bananas. Two games in one box: a lightly polished remaster of 2011's Sonic Generations and a brand new Shadow campaign that is the best 3D Sonic in years. Fast and fun, but the Shadow half is short and the old half barely changed.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC (SEGA, released October 25 2024). The Amazon button is the US PS5 disc, 19.93 dollars at my Oct 26 check, down from a 49.99 dollar list price, sold and shipped by Amazon.com, with only two left at that moment. Stock and price may change fast.

Sit with me a moment. Every troop has one young ape who insists Shadow is cooler than Sonic. For years I smiled and said nothing. After this game, I owe that kid an apology.

What It Wants To Be

The package holds two campaigns. Sonic Generations is the 2011 game where classic Sonic and modern Sonic team up across remixed stages from the series history, now remastered. Shadow Generations is a new campaign starring Shadow, mixing 2D and 3D stages, an open White Space hub, and new Doom Powers that let him surf, fly, and smash through levels.

What Works

Critics liked it, with an 80 on Metacritic for the PS5 version. The Shadow campaign is the reason: the stages are fast, flashy, and full of shortcuts, and the Doom Powers add real variety. Sonic Generations still holds up as one of the best Sonic games. The pairing sold well too: SEGA announced more than two million copies sold worldwide in January 2025.

What Breaks

Listen well. The Shadow campaign is short, a weekend for most players. The Generations remaster changes little and keeps some of the old physics quirks and cheap deaths. A few new boss fights drag. If you already finished Generations, you are paying mostly for Shadow.

Who Should Play

Play it if you love fast platformers, if a Shadow fan lives in your house, or if you never played Sonic Generations. Skip it if you want a long adventure for your money; at a sale price, that worry fades.
