7.5 of 10 bananas. Sonic Team drops Sonic onto open islands full of rails, puzzles, and towering Titan bosses. The speed and the boss fights are a thrill, but pop-in, thin Cyberspace stages, and empty spaces hold it back.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC on Steam (Sonic Team and SEGA, released November 8 2022). The Amazon button is the US PS5 disc. At my Oct 27 2026 check it was sold and shipped by Amazon.com, far below its 39.99 dollar list price. Amazon also flagged low stock on one of its offer views, so check it before you count on it.

Sit with me a moment. For thirty years the hedgehog ran down hallways someone else built. Fast, yes, but always in a tube. Then SEGA opened the doors and said: the whole island is yours. A fast animal with nowhere to be is a dangerous and wonderful thing.

What It Wants To Be

Sonic Frontiers is an open zone game. Sonic explores the Starfall Islands, grinding rails, solving small puzzles, and fighting enemies to collect Chaos Emeralds and free his friends. Short Cyberspace levels bring back classic linear stages. Each island ends with a fight against a giant Titan set to loud rock music. A free update in 2023, The Final Horizon, added new playable characters, harder challenges, and a new ending.

What Works

Critics were split but mostly positive, around the low to mid 70s on Metacritic, and players rated it higher than many recent Sonic games. Running across the islands at full speed feels great. The Titan boss fights are the peak, pure spectacle with a soundtrack that hits hard. The skill tree and combat give Sonic more to do than ever, and the Final Horizon update gave expert players a real test.

What Breaks

Listen well. The islands are pretty but often empty, and rails and platforms pop in out of thin air in front of you. The Cyberspace stages are short and reuse old level themes. Story and dialogue are quiet and slow for a Sonic game. The original final boss was a letdown until the Final Horizon update replaced it, and the new ending is tough.

Who Should Play

Play it if you love Sonic and wanted to see the series try something new, or if you like open worlds you can sprint through in a weekend. Skip it if you only want classic 2D Sonic; Sonic Mania or Sonic X Shadow Generations will serve you better.
