Honest note: This replaces my earlier page and its 9 of 10 score, which read as if I had played to the endings before launch. I had not, and that was wrong. This verdict is not a fresh hands-on playtest either. I built it from launch reviews, critic consensus, and what is known about the shipped game. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: The PS5 Day One Edition disc is the Amazon button, in stock at my check. The game also launched on PC on Steam. Reviewers flagged heavy stutter on the PC version at launch, so console is the safer pick until patches land. There is no Xbox version.

Sit with me a moment. My old page on this game scored it 9 and talked like I had already walked its fog to the end. I had not. So I tore that page down. Here is the honest version, built from what the critics and the shipped game tell us. The fog is still the star.

What It Wants To Be

Townfall is a first person Silent Hill spin-off from Screen Burn Interactive, published by Konami with Annapurna Interactive as a partner. It is set in 1996 in St. Amelia, a fog bound fishing town on the Scottish coast scarred by tragedy. You play Simon, an outsider, and carry a pocket television, the CRTV, to tune into unstable signals for puzzles and stealth. Combat exists, but evasion is the heart of it. There are multiple endings and a New Game Plus.

What Works

Atmosphere and sound earn praise in nearly every review. St. Amelia's sandstone streets, bunting, and empty homes feel specific and real, and the story of a corporate disaster and a town's shame hits hard. The puzzles are smart, the CRTV is a fresh tool, and many critics call it one of the scariest games of the year. It sits around 81 on both Metacritic and OpenCritic.

What Breaks

Listen well. Stealth is the big split. Many reviewers found the hiding and trial and error punishing and repetitive in tough stretches. Some puzzles frustrate, one late puzzle especially. The PC version shipped with bad stutter. And a few critics found the story slow or the characters flat next to Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill f.

Who Should Play

Play if you want slow, heavy psychological horror with real dread. Skip or wait if you hate stealth sections and trial and error. Then read my Silent Hill 2 and Silent Hill f verdicts.
