9.0 of 10 bananas. Sharp combat, clever time powers, and one of the best maps in the genre. The story is the only weak blade.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, patch history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: The PS5 disc (standard edition, Ubisoft) is the Amazon button. At my check it was sold by a third-party seller. Check the seller and price before you pay. The game also runs on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC on Steam.

Sit with me a moment. I did not expect a Prince of Persia without a prince to steal a week of my nights. Then I parried a boss, dashed through a gap, rewound to a shadow I left behind, and landed a combo that felt like a dance. Old gorilla, new tricks.

What It Wants To Be

Ubisoft Montpellier's 2024 return to side-scrolling roots. You play Sargon, a young warrior of the Immortals, sent to rescue the kidnapped prince on Mount Qaf, a cursed mountain where time breaks. It is a full metroidvania: a big interconnected map, new powers that open old paths, and boss fights that test reflexes.

What Works

Combat is fast and precise, with parries that feel wonderful to land. The time powers are clever, both in fights and in platforming puzzles. Mount Qaf is a dense, varied map, and the memory shard system, where you pin a screenshot to the map, is a small genius idea every metroidvania should steal. It runs smooth, and the difficulty and assist options let almost anyone finish.

What Breaks

Listen well. The story and dialogue are flat compared to the gameplay. Some late platforming challenges are brutal. The art style is clean but not memorable to everyone. Ubisoft said sales fell short of its hopes, so do not expect a sequel soon, which is a loss for the whole jungle.

Who Should Play

Play if you love Hollow Knight, Metroid, or any game where the map is the real story. Skip if you hate backtracking or precise platforming. Beginners welcome, the assist options are generous.

STRENGTHS

  • Fast, precise combat
  • Clever time powers
  • Superb interconnected map
  • Memory shards and generous assists

HONEST COSTS

  • Flat story
  • Brutal late platforming
  • Art style is clean, not iconic
  • No sequel in sight
