8.0 of 10 bananas. A loaded fighting game with a great story mode and a grind that tests your patience.

By the Alpha. PS4 disc listing. Updated Oct 17 2026.

Honest note: This verdict is not from a fresh hands-on playtest. I built it from launch coverage, critic consensus, patch history, and known play. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: The Amazon button is the US PS4 Standard Edition disc (Warner Bros. Games, ESRB Mature, released April 23 2019). It also plays on PS5 through backward compatibility. At my Oct 17 check it was in stock from a third-party seller, shipped by Amazon, around 21 dollars. Online play on PlayStation needs PlayStation Plus. PC on Steam, Xbox One, and Switch versions also exist. The Ultimate content and later fighters are not on this disc.

Sit with me a moment. I have watched young players skip story modes in fighting games. Do not skip this one. Mortal Kombat 11 tells a time bending tale with real fun in it, and then it hands you the deepest grind in the series.

What It Wants To Be

NetherRealm Studios built it and Warner Bros. released it in April 2019. The keeper of time, Kronika, rewrites history, bringing young and old versions of fighters face to face. The Aftermath expansion later added more story and fighters.

What Works

The cinematic story mode is one of the best in the genre. Fighting is slower and more grounded than in Mortal Kombat X, with Fatal Blows and Krushing Blows giving comebacks and big moments. Character customization with variations is deep. Fatalities are as gruesome and creative as ever.

What Breaks

Listen well. At launch the Towers of Time and the Krypt were tuned around a punishing grind, and the backlash was loud. Patches eased it, but unlocking cosmetics still takes a long time. Some balance swings over the years frustrated players. Online quality varied, especially at launch.

Who Should Play

Play if you want a full featured fighter with a strong story mode and friends to play. Skip if grinding for cosmetics drives you up the tree.

STRENGTHS

  • A strong cinematic story mode
  • Grounded, readable fights
  • Deep customization
  • Creative Fatalities

HONEST COSTS

  • Heavy cosmetic grind
  • Balance swings
  • Uneven online at launch
  • Base disc lacks later fighters
