8.0 of 10 bananas. A huge, generous wasteland that trades some role-playing depth for gunplay and building.

By the Alpha. PS4 disc listing. Updated Oct 13 2026.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, patch history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: The Amazon button is Fallout 4 Game of the Year Edition for PS4 (Bethesda). At my check Amazon showed it in stock, sold by Amazon.com. The PS4 disc also plays on a PS5 with a disc drive. Fallout 4 is also on Xbox and on PC through Steam, and Bethesda shipped a free next-gen update for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in 2024.

Sit with me a moment. I walked out of Vault 111 years ago, saw that bright, ruined Boston sky, and lost a whole weekend before I found the main quest again. That is still the magic here. You step outside, and the map starts talking to you.

What It Wants To Be

Bethesda's 2015 open world RPG drops you into a post-war Boston as the Sole Survivor, searching for a missing son. The Game of the Year Edition bundles the base game with its six add-ons, including Far Harbor, Nuka-World, and Automatron, plus the settlement workshop packs.

What Works

Exploration is the star. Every building has a little story, a terminal, a locked safe, a body in a bathtub with a note nearby. The gunplay is a big step up from the older games, and VATS still makes every fight feel like a choice. Power armor feels heavy and special. Settlement building is deep enough to eat hundreds of hours if you like that kind of thing, and Far Harbor is one of the best add-ons Bethesda has made.

What Breaks

Listen well. The voiced protagonist and the four-choice dialogue wheel cut a lot of the role-playing freedom older Fallout fans loved, and many lines boil down to yes, sarcastic yes, and later. The main story is weaker than the side content. Radiant quests from the Minutemen will chase you across the map. The settlement tools can feel clumsy on a controller, and Bethesda bugs still crawl through the wasteland.

Who Should Play

Play if you want a big world to wander, loot, and build in, and you enjoy shooting more than reading long dialogue trees. Skip if you want deep choices and reactive writing first. If that is you, the older Fallout: New Vegas is the better fit.

STRENGTHS

  • Rich, story-filled exploration
  • Much better gunplay than older Fallout
  • Deep settlement building
  • Strong DLC, Far Harbor above all

HONEST COSTS

  • Thin dialogue and role-play choices
  • Weaker main story
  • Repetitive radiant quests
  • Bugs still roam
ALPHA VERDICT: 8.0 of 10. Play it if you want a wasteland to get lost in. The building and the wandering carry it further than the story does. Get Fallout 4 Game of the Year Edition for PS4 on Amazon, then meet the troop on Twitch.
