DREDGE: GO HOME BEFORE DARK

8.5 of 10 bananas. A cozy fishing game that turns sinister after sunset: sell your catch, upgrade your boat, and do not stay out in the fog. Short and a little light on challenge, but one of the most original indie hits of recent years.
By the Alpha. Steam listing. Updated Oct 22 2026.
Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.
Platforms: PC on Steam, plus PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Switch (Black Salt Games and Team17, released March 30 2023). The button on this page is the Steam store page. On Amazon US at my Oct 22 check the US PS5 Deluxe Edition was currently unavailable, the PS5 Complete Edition was listed at 89.99 dollars, and the Switch Deluxe listing showed European PEGI box art from a third-party seller, so there is no Amazon button.
Get DREDGE on SteamSit with me a moment. Every elder has a rule the young ones laugh at until the night they break it. In DREDGE the rule is simple: be home before dark. You will break it. Everyone does.
What It Wants To Be
DREDGE is a fishing adventure with a horror heart. You arrive by boat at a small island chain, take a job as the new fisherman, and sail the waters catching fish to sell. Your cargo hold is a grid where catches must fit like puzzle pieces. Money buys better engines, nets, and rods to reach deeper waters. But some fish come up wrong, there are things in the fog, and a stranger on a dock asks you to dredge up items he will not explain.
What Works
The loop is calm and addictive: one more trip, one more upgrade. Then night falls, your panic rises, and rocks appear where there were none. The contrast between cozy and creepy is the whole magic, and the art and sound sell it. The paid expansions, The Pale Reach and The Iron Rig, add more to explore. Its Steam page showed Overwhelmingly Positive, about 96 percent of 57,634 user reviews, at my Oct 22 check, and it was on sale for 10.79 dollars.
What Breaks
Listen well. It is short; most players will see the main story in a weekend or two. Once your boat is fully upgraded the danger fades, and the scares lose their teeth. There is little true combat or challenge, so action fans may get bored. And the best physical console editions on Amazon US were gone or overpriced at my check.
Who Should Play
Play it if you love cozy games but want a chill down your spine, or if you want a short, complete indie gem for October nights. Skip it if you want long play or hard challenge.
STRENGTHS
- Cozy and creepy at once
- Addictive upgrade loop
- Beautiful art and sound
- Cheap on sale
HONEST COSTS
- Short main story
- Danger fades late
- Light challenge
- No fair Amazon listing at my check
Store note: the troop still needs an Amazon referral for this one. At my Oct 22 check the Amazon US listings were unavailable, overpriced, or showed a European box, which I will not push on the troop. Steam is the only button until a fair listing is real. This is not an affiliate link.
