9.0 of 10 bananas. A one person masterpiece: a tiny blob explores a strange well full of animals, tools, and secrets layered so deep the community spent months finding them all. No combat to speak of, just wonder, dread, and clever puzzles.

By the Alpha. Steam listing. Updated Oct 31 2026.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: PC on Steam, plus PS5, Switch, and Xbox (made by Billy Basso at Shared Memory, published by Bigmode, released May 9 2024). The button is the Steam page, 17.49 dollars at my Oct 31 2026 check, which looked like a sale price. I did not verify a fair US Amazon listing for a console copy, so Steam is the only button.

Get Animal Well on Steam

Sit with me a moment. You are a small blob in a dark well. A ghost cat follows you. A giant seahorse watches from the water. You find a bubble wand, then a yo-yo, then a frisbee, and each toy quietly changes what the whole map means. My troop still argues about what we missed.

What It Wants To Be

Animal Well is a 2D exploration puzzle game in the metroidvania style. You wander an interconnected underground world full of animals, some friendly and some terrifying. Instead of weapons you collect tools, like a bubble wand, a slinky, and a yo-yo, that open new paths and puzzles. Beneath the main game there are deeper layers of secrets that the community spent a long time uncovering together.

What Works

Critics placed it around 90 on Metacritic, and it won awards in 2024. The pixel art and lighting are stunning, the sound design builds real dread without combat, and the tools are used in endlessly clever ways. The secret layers are some of the most ambitious hidden puzzles in modern games.

What Breaks

Listen well. There is little direction, so some players will get lost and frustrated. A few chase sequences and animal encounters are genuinely stressful. The deepest secrets need patience, notes, or a community to solve. And the main credits come after only a handful of hours if you rush.

Who Should Play

Play it if you loved Fez, Tunic, or Hollow Knight's secrets, or if you enjoy puzzles more than fights. Skip it if you need clear goals and steady action.

STRENGTHS

  • Stunning pixel art and lighting
  • Clever tools instead of weapons
  • Deep, layered secrets
  • Tense mood without combat

HONEST COSTS

  • Little direction, easy to get lost
  • Stressful chase sections
  • Deepest secrets need huge patience
  • Short if you rush the credits
ALPHA VERDICT: 9.0 of 10. A modern classic of secrets and wonder. Buy it, keep a notebook, and do not look up spoilers. Get Animal Well on Steam, then meet the troop on Twitch.

Store note: the troop still needs an Amazon referral for this one. I did not verify a fair US Amazon listing for a physical console copy of Animal Well. Steam is the only button until a fair listing is real. This is not an affiliate link.
