ANIMAL CROSSING: NEW HORIZONS: THE ISLAND THAT WAITS FOR YOU

9.0 of 10 bananas. A slow, generous island life sim that rewards ten minutes a day for years, with honest catches on co-op and the one island per console rule.

By the Alpha. Switch game card listing. Updated Oct 16 2026.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: Nintendo Switch only. The Amazon button is the US Nintendo Switch physical game card (Nintendo, ESRB E, released March 20 2020). At my Oct 16 check it was in stock from a third-party seller, shipped by Amazon, in the low fifties. It also plays on Switch 2. A separate Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and an upgrade pack are sold too; this button is not that edition. No PC, PlayStation, or Xbox version exists.

Sit with me a moment. Most games shout at you. This one hands you a tent, a fishing rod, and a raccoon with a business plan, then lets you breathe. Young gorillas ask me where the boss fight is. There is none. The boss is your own patience, and the reward is a place that feels like yours.

What It Wants To Be

Nintendo moved Animal Crossing to a deserted island for the Switch in March 2020. You arrive on a Nook Inc. getaway package, pay off loans, craft tools and furniture from DIY recipes, invite animal neighbors, fill a museum, and slowly reshape the whole island. The clock and seasons follow real time, even your hemisphere. The free 2.0 update and the paid Happy Home Paradise expansion in late 2021 added cooking, a cafe, boat tours, and vacation home design. Then, in January 2026, the free version 3.0 update added Kapp'n's resort hotel, Slumber Islands to build on, Resetti's Reset Service, crafting up to 10 items at once, and far more home storage, on both Switch and Switch 2.

What Works

The daily ritual is the magic. Check the shops, talk to neighbors, dig up a fossil, catch tonight's fish, then leave. Ten minutes feels complete. Once terraforming opens, the island becomes a canvas, and players have built gardens, towns, and jokes the developers never planned. Visiting a friend's island online or swapping designs is pure warm chaos. The sound design and seasonal events give the year a heartbeat.

What Breaks

Listen well. Every Switch gets one island, shared by every profile on that console. Family members do not get their own. In couch co-op, the leader holds the power and followers mostly tag along. Breaking tools and menu shuffling still add friction, even after version 3.0 let you craft in batches. Progress is gated by real days on purpose, which some players love and some call a wall. Some of the shiniest extras, like 12-player online sessions, 4K output, and mouse decorating, belong to the paid Switch 2 Edition, not this original card.

Who Should Play

Move in if you want a calm daily habit, cozy creativity, or a gentle game to share with kids and partners. Skip it if you need combat, a driving story, or a fast finish. If you already own a Switch 2, decide first whether you want the Switch 2 Edition; this button is the original Switch card.

STRENGTHS

  • A daily ritual that lasts years
  • Terraforming and decorating freedom
  • Real-time seasons and events
  • Free 2026 update added a hotel and Slumber Islands

HONEST COSTS

  • One island per console
  • Followers are passengers in couch co-op
  • Slow, gated progress by design
  • Third-party seller at my check
