TITANFALL 2: TRUST ME, PILOT

Sit with me a moment. In 2016 this game launched one week after Battlefield 1 and one week before a Call of Duty, and the jungle barely heard it land. That was a crime. The troop that did play it still talks about a big robot and a time machine like old friends.

What It Wants To Be

Respawn's sequel pairs rifleman Jack Cooper with BT-7274, a Titan who speaks in very literal sentences, for a campaign about a war on the Frontier. Around it sits a fast multiplayer mode built on wall running, double jumps, and calling your own Titan down from orbit.

What Works

Movement is the soul of the game. You slide, wall run, and chain jumps with a flow few shooters ever matched. The campaign keeps inventing. Every level has a new idea, and Effect and Cause, where you jump between two points in time with one button, is one of the great shooter levels. The bond between Cooper and BT lands, which is rare for a robot buddy story. Gunplay is crisp and Titan fights feel heavy.

What Breaks

Listen well. The campaign is short, around six hours for most players, so buy it for quality, not length. The multiplayer population is thin today, and EA has not given the game new content in years, so do not buy it expecting a busy online home. The story itself is simple once you take away the set pieces.

Who Should Play

Play if you love single player shooters, or you missed this one in 2016. It is cheap now and still feels fresh. Skip if you only want an active online shooter with seasons and updates.
