9.5 of 10 bananas. A short, perfect puzzle lesson with the funniest villain a test chamber ever had.

By the Alpha. Steam storefront. Updated Oct 16 2026.

Honest note: This verdict is not from a fresh hands-on playtest. I built it from launch coverage, critic consensus, patch history, and known play. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: PC on Steam is the button. It first shipped in The Orange Box on PC, Xbox 360, and PS3, and Portal: Companion Collection brings it to Nintendo Switch. No Amazon listing is linked yet, so Steam is the only button.

Sit with me a moment. Young gorillas think a game must be long to be great. Portal proves them wrong in an afternoon. One gun, two holes, and a calm voice that lies to you. That is all it needs.

What It Wants To Be

Valve released Portal in 2007 inside The Orange Box. You are Chell, a test subject in the Aperture Science Enrichment Center, guided through test chambers by the AI GLaDOS. The portal device lets you link two surfaces and move through space in ways that rewrite how you read a room.

What Works

Every chamber teaches one idea, then twists it. You never feel lectured, and the moment a solution clicks is pure joy. GLaDOS is a masterclass in comedy writing, dry, cruel, and quotable. The final stretch, once you slip behind the walls, turns a puzzle game into a story.

What Breaks

Listen well. It is short, a few hours for most players. The visuals show their 2007 age. Some momentum puzzles demand precise timing that frustrates players who just want to think. Once you know the jokes, replays lose some bite.

Who Should Play

Play if you have never played it, full stop. Skip only if you refuse first person games entirely. Then go straight to Portal 2.

STRENGTHS

  • Puzzle teaching without tutorials
  • GLaDOS
  • A perfect length with no filler
  • A finale that surprises

HONEST COSTS

  • Very short
  • Dated visuals
  • Some fussy momentum puzzles
  • No Amazon offer to link yet
ALPHA VERDICT: 9.5 of 10. Short, sharp, and close to perfect. Play it before Portal 2. Get Portal on Steam, then meet the troop on Twitch.

Store note: Steam is the only button until a real Amazon listing is linked. The troop earns nothing from the Steam link.
