PAPER MARIO: THE THOUSAND-YEAR DOOR: THE GAMECUBE LEGEND, REFOLDED

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Nintendo Switch box art with paper Mario and his partners

9.0 of 10 bananas. Intelligent Systems rebuilds the best-loved Paper Mario with gorgeous papercraft and kind quality of life changes. Funny, clever, and full of heart, but the backtracking and a 30 frames per second cap remain.

By the Alpha. Switch cartridge listing. Updated Oct 26 2026.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: Nintendo Switch (Intelligent Systems and Nintendo, released May 23 2024), and it also runs on Switch 2. The Amazon button is the Switch cartridge, 49.49 dollars at my Oct 26 check, sold by a third-party seller (MaxProductSales) and shipped by Amazon. The product line on the listing says Nintendo Switch, but its option picker oddly labels this choice Nintendo Switch 2, so confirm the box in your cart is the Switch cartridge.

Sit with me a moment. In 2004 a flat Mario walked onto a stage, bowed to a paper crowd, and taught a whole generation that a turn-based RPG could be funny. The troop has asked for this one back for twenty years. Nintendo listened.

What It Wants To Be

This is a full remake of the 2004 GameCube RPG. Mario chases a treasure map to a seedy port town called Rogueport and the legend of a door that has been sealed for a thousand years. Battles are turn-based and play out on a theater stage, where timed button presses called Action Commands boost your attacks and blocks, and the audience rewards style. Partners join along the way, each with a field skill and a personality.

What Works

It is one of the best-reviewed Switch games of 2024, with an 88 on Metacritic from more than 100 critics. The writing is still sharp and kind, the chapters swing from wrestling rings to a murder mystery on a train, and the new papercraft lighting is beautiful. The remake adds helpful touches, like a hub of pipes to cut travel and faster partner swaps, without sanding off the charm.

What Breaks

Listen well. Some chapters still make you walk the same paths back and forth, and that drags even with the fixes. The remake runs at 30 frames per second, down from the GameCube's 60, which some players notice in battle. Early hours are text heavy. Combat gets easy once you master the timing and badges.

Who Should Play

Play it if you love RPGs with jokes, if you have never played a turn-based game and want a friendly door in, or if you missed the GameCube original. Skip it if backtracking makes you quit.
