8.0 of 10 bananas. HAL rebuilt its 2011 Wii side scroller for Switch with a fresh coat of paint, new copy abilities, a minigame fairground, and an extra epilogue. A warm, easy four player Kirby that saves its best fights for the end.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: Nintendo Switch only (developed by HAL Laboratory, published by Nintendo, released February 24 2023; the original came out on Wii in 2011). It also runs on Switch 2. The Amazon button is the Switch cartridge. At my Oct 28 2026 check it was sold by a third-party seller named amazinoutlet and shipped by Amazon, under the original 59.99 dollar price. Look at the seller before you pay.

Sit with me a moment. There is a game I hand to the youngest ape in any troop, and it is always a Kirby. You cannot really fail. You float over the pit, you swallow the problem, and you smile. This one adds three friends on the same couch, which makes it the gentlest party in my library.

What It Wants To Be

Kirby's Return to Dream Land Deluxe is a 2D side scrolling platformer for up to four players. Kirby helps the alien traveler Magolor rebuild his crashed ship, the Lor Starcutter, by finding its scattered parts across worlds. Friends can drop in as Kirbys of other colors, King Dedede, Meta Knight, or Bandana Waddle Dee. The Deluxe version adds new copy abilities including Sand and Mecha, the Merry Magoland fairground of minigames, a Helper Magolor assist mode for beginners, and a new epilogue starring Magolor himself.

What Works

Critics placed it in the high 70s on Metacritic. The new art is bright and clean, copy abilities have big move sets, and the four player play is smooth because the screen follows the lead Kirby and others can piggyback. Merry Magoland is a real bonus for parties. And Kirby games always hide teeth late: the final boss run and the Magolor Epilogue are where the challenge finally shows.

What Breaks

Listen well. For most of the main game it is very easy, even for kids, and Helper Magolor makes it easier still. In four player co-op the screen gets busy and followers can feel like passengers. And it is a remake of a 2011 Wii game at a near full price, so a fair third-party price matters here.

Who Should Play

Play it if you have small apes learning their first platformer, a partner who does not usually play games, or a love for Kirby. Skip it if you want a hard platformer; Celeste or Donkey Kong will treat you rougher.

STRENGTHS

  • Bright, clean Switch remake
  • Easy drop in four player co-op
  • Merry Magoland minigames
  • Magolor Epilogue adds real challenge

HONEST COSTS

  • Very easy main game
  • Busy screen in four player
  • Remake of a 2011 Wii game
  • Third-party seller at my check
