8.5 of 10 bananas. A delivery game that turns every step into a story. Strange, slow, and unlike anything else.

By the Alpha. PC on Steam. Updated Oct 2026.

Platforms: PC on Steam is the button. The Director's Cut is also on PS5, and a port reached Apple devices. The original game came to PS4 in 2019. I only found PEGI import copies of the PS5 disc on Amazon US, not the US edition, so there is no Amazon button here.

Sit with me a moment. I was carrying four crates of medicine up a snowy mountain. My balance was going, the rain ages everything it touches, and I was out of rope. Then I found a ladder another player had left in the exact spot I needed it. I never met them. I sent them a like and kept walking. That is when this game clicked for me.

What It Wants To Be

Hideo Kojima's first game from his own studio, Kojima Productions. The original arrived on PS4 in November 2019. The Director's Cut came to PS5 in September 2021 and to PC in March 2022. You are Sam Porter Bridges, played by Norman Reedus, a courier who reconnects the cities of a shattered America one delivery at a time. Mads Mikkelsen and Lea Seydoux round out a strange and moving cast. The Director's Cut adds new missions, a firing range, a racing track, new tools like the support skeleton and cargo catapult, and a stealth infiltration area.

What Works

The walking is the game, and it is brilliant. You plan routes, balance cargo, pick your path over rocks and rivers, and feel every slope. The social system is a quiet masterpiece: bridges, ladders, and roads built by other players appear in your world, and you build for them too. The music hits at the right moments, when a long trek opens onto a big view. The ghostly BT encounters are tense and eerie. Once you unlock vehicles, ziplines, and the road network, the map changes in a way that feels earned.

What Breaks

Listen well. The first few chapters are slow and heavy with cutscenes, and many players quit before it opens up. The menus are dense. The story gets very strange, with its own vocabulary of beaches and strands, and some cutscenes run long. Gunfights are the weakest part. If you hate fetch quests, this whole game is a fetch quest by design, so be honest with yourself.

Who Should Play

Play if you want something truly different, love quiet exploration, or enjoy planning and logistics. Skip if you need constant action. Push to chapter three before you judge it. Then read my Death Stranding 2 verdict for the sequel.

STRENGTHS

  • Walking and route planning that feel great
  • Player-built structures appear in your world
  • Strong cast and music
  • Director's Cut adds useful tools and missions

HONEST COSTS

  • Very slow opening chapters
  • Long and strange cutscenes
  • Weak gunplay
  • No US Amazon edition found, Steam only here
ALPHA VERDICT: 8.5 of 10. A strange and beautiful walk. Not for everyone, but nobody else makes games like this. Get Death Stranding Director's Cut on Steam, then meet the troop on Twitch.

Store note: the troop still needs an Amazon referral for this one. Steam is the only button until that listing is real.
