8.5 of 10 bananas. A faithful remake that makes the Ishimura feel whole.

By the Alpha. 2023 remake, not the 2008 original. Steam storefront. Updated Oct 2026.

Platforms: PC on Steam is the button. PS5 and Xbox versions also exist. I found the US PS5 disc on Amazon, but it had no featured offer when I checked, so this page does not send you to a dead listing.

Sit with me a moment. Most shooters teach you to aim for the head. Dead Space laughs at that. The first time a Necromorph kept crawling at me after a headshot, I learned the rule fast: take the legs, then the arms, then run.

What It Wants To Be

Motive Studio's remake of the 2008 survival horror classic, published by EA. Released January 27, 2023. Engineer Isaac Clarke boards the mining ship USG Ishimura and finds the crew slaughtered. Isaac now has a voice, and the ship is one connected space with no loading screens.

What Works

Strategic dismemberment still feels great. A new layered gore system peels flesh off enemies, so you can read how close a creature is to falling. The Ishimura is one connected ship, and side areas reward exploring. Zero gravity sections now let you fly freely. Sound design is superb. Headphones on, lights low, and the vents become your enemy.

What Breaks

Listen well. If you played the original, few surprises remain. Story beats and most scares are the same. It is around a dozen hours, and the back half leans on backtracking. Some new objectives feel like busywork. A few cheap jump scares do not land the way the slow dread does.

Who Should Play

Play if you love sci-fi horror or never finished the original. Skip if you want horror with no shooting at all. If you want more Capcom-style action horror, read my Resident Evil 4 verdict.

ALPHA VERDICT: 8.5 of 10. A faithful, polished remake. Not reinvented, but very well rebuilt. Get Dead Space on Steam, then meet the troop on Twitch.

Store note: the troop still needs an Amazon referral for this one. Steam is the only button until that listing is real.
