9.0 of 10 bananas. One of the best action roguelites ever made, with fast, crunchy combat and endless builds. This edition adds every major expansion, including a Castlevania crossover. It is hard, and the early unlock grind is real.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and mobile (Motion Twin and Evil Empire, full release August 7 2018). Sit with me a moment. Young gorillas hate losing. Old gorillas know that losing is how you learn the jungle. Dead Cells is a game built on that truth. You will die, a lot, and every death sends you back to the start a little smarter and a little stronger.

What It Wants To Be

Dead Cells is a roguevania: a 2D action game with the run-based structure of a roguelite and the interlinked map of a Metroidvania. You play a blob of cells that takes over a body in a cursed island prison and fights to escape. Each run gives you random weapons and skills, and between runs you spend collected cells to unlock new gear for future runs. The Return to Castlevania expansion brings Alucard, Richter, Dracula's castle, and classic Castlevania weapons into the mix.

What Works

Combat is the best part, and it is superb. Every weapon feels distinct, moves are fast and precise, and you can build around bleeding, freezing, traps, or a frying pan. The world has many routes, so runs stay fresh. Boss fights are sharp and fair. The pixel art and animation are gorgeous. Developers kept updating it for years, and the Castlevania crossover is a loving tribute, not a cash grab. Critics placed it near the top of the genre.

What Breaks

Listen well. It is hard, and the higher Boss Cell difficulties are brutal. The first hours can feel like a grind while you unlock better gear. Random drops mean some runs are lost before they start. If you dislike repetition by design, roguelites may not be your vine.

Who Should Play

Play it if you love tight action and want a game you can pick up for one more run for years. It is a perfect Switch game for short sessions. Skip it if losing progress on death makes you angry instead of curious.
