DARKEST DUNGEON: THE MIND BREAKS BEFORE THE BODY

Darkest Dungeon key art with a crusader, a plague doctor, and a highwayman in the dark, from the Switch digital code listing

8.5 of 10 bananas. A gothic turn-based dungeon RPG where your heroes crack under stress before they fall to wounds. Brutal, stylish, and unforgettable, but the grind and the random swings will test your patience.

By the Alpha. Switch digital code listing. Updated Oct 23 2026.

Honest note: This is not a fresh hands-on playtest. I built this verdict from launch reviews, critic consensus, update history, and what is known about the game today. If I put real hours in on stream, I will update the score and say so.

Platforms: PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One (Red Hook Studios, first released January 2016 on PC; Switch in January 2018). The Amazon button is the Nintendo Switch digital code, sold by Amazon.com Services at 24.99 dollars at my Oct 23 check, the same as the Steam price. It is a download code, not a cartridge.

Sit with me a moment. The young ones think strength is muscle. The old ones know it is nerve. Darkest Dungeon is the only game I know that makes you lose a fight because your bravest warrior simply could not take any more.

What It Wants To Be

You inherit a ruined family estate and the horrors your ancestor dug up beneath it. You recruit a roster of heroes, from crusaders to plague doctors, and send them in parties of four into dungeons for turn-based battles. They gain stress from darkness, horror, and bad luck. Too much stress and they can break, turning paranoid, selfish, or hopeless, and they can die for good. Between runs you manage the hamlet, healing minds and bodies for gold.

What Works

The stress system is brilliant: your heroes feel like people, not stats. The art is gothic and gorgeous, and the narrator, voiced by Wayne June, turns every crit and death into theater. Battles reward careful positioning and party building. Critics scored it 84 on Metacritic for PC, and its influence on roguelikes is still felt.

What Breaks

Listen well. It is a grind by design: you will level heroes, lose them, and start again. Random swings can wipe a party you spent hours on, which feels unfair more than once. The late game asks for a lot of repetition before the final dungeon. Text and icons are small on Switch in handheld mode.

Who Should Play

Play it if you love tough tactics, dark fantasy, and stories made of your own losses. Skip it if random failure makes you angry, or if you want a short game.

STRENGTHS

  • Brilliant stress system
  • Gorgeous gothic art
  • Legendary narrator
  • Deep party building

HONEST COSTS

  • Heavy grind
  • Random swings wipe parties
  • Repetitive late game
  • Small text in handheld
